CBD and Dogs
The evolution of Raw CBD Oil use has seen the application developer from use with humans into use with our beloved animals, and especially well documented is the use of CBD with our beloved pet pooches. But what are the potential benefits and is it safe? As a nation of dog lovers, we would never want to do anything to harm our furry companions so undoubtedly a lot more research is required.
However, with the growing number of forums on social media which feature 1000’s personal stories from pet owners, it seems this natural remedy has benefits that reach far beyond just the human experience.
What Do We Know So Far?
Available reports to date are pretty conclusive in that CBD oil, along with Hemp oil, can reduce inflammation in dogs in a similar way that it does with humans. The result of this is that it can improve mobility by reducing the distressing symptoms of ailments such as arthritis and/or chronic pain.
As with humans, CBD when used with dogs also has been found to ease anxiety and reduce the frequency and impact of seizures.
With regards to chronic pain, CBD oil benefits have been found to prevent the animal’s body from absorbing a chemical called ‘anandamide’, which is a pain regulator. By the chemical remaining in the bloodstream, rather than being absorbed by the body, less pain is communicated through the nervous system.
Also worth noting is that trans-dermal application (over the skin) has to be found to be very effective and not necessarily just oral consumption. (University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, 2016).
The relationship between anxiety and CBD is well documented for humans but it has also been found to have a calming effect on dogs and therefore can help with a variety of anxiety issues. Similar to humans, CBD Oil for Pain is found to interact with serotonin levels in the brain which plays a vital role in feelings of well-being and happiness.
Interestingly, the production of serotonin can also influence appetite. As we know, if feeling low, anxious, or depressed it is common to have a reduction in the desire for food. Therefore, CBD can help dogs to find an increase in appetite should it be an issue and owners are concerned their pet may be underweight.
Epilepsy also some benefits dogs have to endure seizures. Studies have shown there are 2 main ways that CBD and anxiety can help. Firstly CBD receptors regulate blood flow to parts of the brain that trigger a seizure which lowers the chance of them occurring. Secondly, the CBD’s anti-inflammatory effect can reduce the potential damage physiologically of a seizure.
It is very difficult to find any documentation of the very serious side effects of using CBD with dogs. It is common that very often no side effects are found at all. However, listed below are some of the side effects that could occur which are also similar to that of the side effects for humans using CBD.
Increased Appetite – As mentioned above this could be a benefit with some dogs, however, if your dog already is overweight an increase in appetite may not be ideal!
Drowsiness – CBD has been found to stimulate neurotransmitters in the brain that moderates sleep activity and can also act as a muscle relaxant, so if you are using CBD with your dog and find they are cuddled up snoozing more than usual this could be why!
Vomiting and/or Diarrhoea – If your dog happens to have an intolerance to CBD then vomiting and or diarrhea may be possible as it can interact with the digestive system. This could also occur if the dog had received an abnormally high dose.
With the possibility of such side effects, it is always recommended to consult with a Vet if considering using CBD with your dog, or indeed any animal. This would be especially important if your pet is already on any kind of medication or has any underlying health conditions.
How can CBD oil be applied to a dog?
If possible, under the tongue would be an effective way to administer the CBD as it is most easily and effectively absorbed into the body this way. This is how to get the very most out of the product. However, if your dog isn’t receptive to this idea then it is possible to drop the oil into food or water very easily and with little fuss.
General CBD Dosage Guide for Dogs
How much CBD to give your beloved pet, depends on the size of the animal, the reason for the administration, and the strength of the oil you are using. Some CBD oils contain other plant chemicals from the hemp plant, known as ‘full-spectrum products. These contain less CBD proportionally in each dose compared to concentrated high-strength pure CBD oil.
The rule of thumb is to use a maximum dosage of 5 mg/kg or 5 mg per 2.2 lbs. Each bottle will tell you how much CBD is released in one drop.
Alternatively, you can divide the total CBD in the bottle by the liquid content to give you the mg of CBD per ml of oil.
Stronger formulas will contain much greater concentrations of CBD per ml. For example, a very strong 600mg formula may contain 20mg of CBD in 1ml of oil whereas a weaker 75mg formula will contain only 2.5mg of CBD per 1ml of oil.
