CBD – Past, Present & Future

CBD – Past, Present & Future

Where did it all start?

Although the use of CBD may feel like recent development in the area of health and well-being, nothing could be further from the truth. Some would say it is one of our oldest medicines.

The first documented use of cannabis-derived medicine dates back to 2737 BC when Chinese Emperor Sheng Nung used a cannabis-infused tea.

Translated as ‘Divine farmer’ or ‘Agricultural God’ Sheng Nung is now widely regarded as the Father of Chinese Medicine. Best CBD oil for fibromyalgia UK, In his lifetime he was credited for various inventions including the hoe, ax, the Chinese calendar, acupuncture, and is said to have instituted the harvest thanksgiving ceremony.

Sheng Nung is reported to have tasted over 365 herbs to discover their effects and medical benefits. The work he left was built upon and investigated further by many generations of doctors and is regarded to be one of the main reasons the knowledge of remedial herbs is so expansive in China.

Globally, research into CBD has been ongoing over the centuries. For example, between 1880 & 1950, more than 30 scientific papers about the medical uses of CBD were published. Such studies looked at the treatment of menstrual pain and stomach ulcers to their uses in severe chronic pain, insomnia & depression. This progress in publication was halted abruptly in the Prohibition era of cannabis from the mid-twentieth century until very recently.

It is only over the last 5 years or so where CBD seems to have become more widely known and has entered into the mainstream. Luckily, the science & the number of research papers is escalating quickly.

Today it is estimated that CBD is currently consumed at least once per year, in some form, by 200-300 million people worldwide (Dr. Dani Gordon, 2020).

Wowcher found in 2019 that the sale of CBD products has skyrocketed by 99% in the UK. Evidentially, CBD is now radically transforming everything from healthcare to the food industry & beauty products, arguably reclaiming its historic position as a part of our culture. Going forwards it may even change the way we socialize, as many people are looking for alternatives to alcohol when it comes to social & stress-relief tools. Unlike alcohol which is neurotoxic, CBD is neuroprotective which means it is protective of your brain.

As further research develops, the acceptance of CBD in modern society continues to become more & more apparent, with millions of people reporting its health & well-being benefits every single day.
